Dear state/congressional representative, I am writing to express my concern about pollution problems in Stekoa Creek in Clayton, Georgia. Stekoa Creek is a polluted stream that runs through downtown Clayton before draining into the National Wild & Scenic Chattooga River and eventually into Lake Tugaloo, which is positioned at the top of the Savannah River Basin. Plagued with chronic sedimentation and fecal coliform problems, Stekoa Creek has been on the State of Georgia's 303(d) list of impaired waterways for over a decade in addition to many other small streams in this area. As such, Stekoa has become an aesthetic blight on the Chattooga River and a serious public health hazard to the residents of Rabun County and its visitors. I am writing to you to ask you for assistance with this problem. A series of newspaper articles in the Clayton Tribune and data collected by the Chattooga Conservancy has indicated that the City of Clayton's failing sewer collection lines are the main reason for the high numbers of fecal coliform bacteria. The city has been making some repairs, but the entire system is in need of a complete overhaul. According to city officials, they simply do not have the funds to do this and cannot pay back a low interest loan, if one were received. I would like to request that you help the City of Clayton solve this financial dilemma. Additionally, maintaining strict limits on construction activities within or near stream buffer zones will help to control the sedimentation problem. Please do not vote in favor of any legislation that would weaken stream buffer laws. As your constituent and a resident of Rabun County, I feel very strongly concerning this issue.
